FAQs

About NAHSHUTTLE

NAHSHUTTLE is the demand-responsive transit service (ridepooling) offered by NAH.SH GmbH. It is a supplemental transport service to public transportation funded by the State of Schleswig-Holstein. The aim is to provide a central digital access point through which people throughout Schleswig-Holstein can book their demand-responsive trips. NAH.SH is cooperating with municipalities from all over the state to integrate their transit services into a Schleswig-Holstein demand-responsive transit app: NAHSHUTTLE.

Currently, NAH.SH and the State of Schleswig-Holstein are partners with three demand-responsive transit services: NAHSHUTTLE-Rensburg (formerly “remo” in the Rendsburg region), NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup (formerly “smartes DorfSHUTTLE” in Amt Süderbrarup) and “Lüttbus” in Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland. The service partners include the counties of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Schleswig-Flensburg, Nordfriesland as well as Amt Süderbrarup.

You’re flexible. Book NAHSHUTTLE when and where you need it. It saves you time. NAHSHUTTLE adapts to your schedule. One click on your smartphone is all it takes to book: NAHSHUTTLE picks you up and takes you directly to your desired destination. By travelling together with other people and leaving your car at home, you reduce exhaust emissions and contribute to a cleaner and greener environment. Some of the vehicles that use NAHSHUTTLE are also hybrids or fully electric.

Demand-responsive transit, also known as on-demand mobility or ridepooling, is the new and innovative way to travel on demand, using virtual stops and an intelligent routing algorithm to get you where you need to go while matching you up with people looking for a trip in a similar direction. All via a simple app.

To book a ride, you need to register once in the app. To do this, enter your name, cell phone number and email address. In addition, we need your credit card details, PayPal details or SEPA direct debit details to charge your fare. You can enter and change these details in the app menu under “Payment” at any time; prepaid credit cards are also accepted.

The app is available free of charge in the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

Once downloaded, open the app on your smartphone and enter your point of departure and destination.

  1. Select, if necessary, additional passengers. To do this, go to the “1 passenger” field and then add the respective passengers via the plus symbol. In this menu you can also select the discount for seasonal tickets and the wheelchair option.
  2. After verifying the proposed route, click on “Book and pay”.
  3. The app will take you to your selected point of departure.

Once there, look out for your vehicle. The app will also show you in real time where your vehicle is heading and its estimated time of arrival.

If you don’t have a smartphone, you can also book by telephone and pay in cash directly in the vehicle (only possible in the service areas of NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg and Lüttbus; you can only pay with a debit card in the service area of NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup).

NAHSHUTTLE is currently available in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Arabic.

It depends on how many other passengers book a similar route as you at the same time. You can find more information about how many seats the vehicles in our partner regions have on their respective websites:

For NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg (formerly “remo”) in the Rendsburg region: www.rendsbus-eckernfoerde.de (only in German)

For NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup (formerly “Smartes DorfSHUTTLE”) in Amt Süderbrarup: www.smartes-dorfshuttle.de (only in German; smartes DorfSHUTTLE will become NAHSHUTTLE as of March 29, 2024 and will be extended throughout the entire Schlei region as a part of the federal grant project “SMILE24”. For more info, visit www.smile24.nah.sh)

For “Lüttbus” in Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland: www.rufbus.nordfriesland.de (only in German)

Tess is a telephone interpreting service for people who are hearing impaired or deaf and use sign language. With this tool for the deaf in everyday life, you can easily make phone calls or book rides with our telephone booking service.

Just provide your Tess interpreter with the corresponding phone number:

0431-66019-93* (NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg and NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup)

04841-675-55* (Lüttbus)

*Tess charges for the use of their service. You can find their pricing here: www.tess-relay-dienste.de/kosten.

How Tess Relay services work:

1. Login and register (in German)

To use the interpreting service, please register online via the Tess website. Here you can create a new account or log in to your existing Tess account.

2. Install the software

You can use Tess on a smartphone, a tablet or on a Windows PC with webcam. Simply install the free app for Android or iOS. For PC use, you need the free MMX software. You can find the download for the apps and MMX software at www.tess-kom.de/client-download.

3. Technical requirements

In order to communicate optimally with the interpreter, a good and stable internet connection is important. Please make sure that your internet connection is strong enough. Tess offers you its own speed test for this purpose.

If you would like to contact Tess on the PC via video, please install a suitable webcam. A webcam with a wide angle is ideal.

4. Now you can book your NAHSHUTTLE

Now start the app on your mobile device or the software on your PC. As soon as you are in contact with an interpreter, please send him/her your booking request and the corresponding phone number 0431-66019-93* (NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg and NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup) 04841-675-55* (Lüttbus) to contact.

The interpreter will call NAHSHUTTLE for you and simultaneously translate the conversation between you and the customer service representative. This is how you can book your ride with NAHSHUTTLE.

*Rates as per the Tess price list.

At the launch of SMILE24, travelers will still have to use several apps if a route includes different modes of transport (a so-called “intermodal” route): From summer 2024, the NAHSHUTTLE on-demand service will also provide information directly in the NAH.SH app.

If the NAH.SH app does not currently show you a connection from your starting point to your destination, you have been redirected here. Don’t worry – we’ll get you to your destination!
Please select one of the 3 situations A, B or C and follow the corresponding steps.

Situation A

You want to be taken from the NAHSHUTTLE to a bus line or train and from there by bus / train?
The following steps are necessary:
1. go to the NAHSHUTTLE app.
2. enter your current / desired start address as the start and the bus stop / train station where you want to go as the destination.
3. book the NAHSHUTTLE with a designated arrival time that will get you to the bus stop / station in time for your onward journey.

Info: The part of the route you want to travel by bus/train should be visible in the NAH.SH app and bookable if required. If you have a valid public transport ticket or a Deutschlandticket, please follow the detailed instructions in the FAQ on fares and Deutschlandticket above.
4. if you do not yet have a valid ticket for the bus/train, you can purchase one in the usual ways.
5. have a good journey!

Situation B

You want to start by bus / train and then be picked up by NAHSHUTTLE at a bus stop / train station to get to your destination? The following steps are necessary:
1. go back to the NAH.SH app and search for your desired bus/train connection.
Info: If you are not sure where you can travel to by bus/train and you find the search too time-consuming, go to situation C.
2. if you do not yet have a valid ticket for the bus/train, you can purchase one in the usual ways.
Info: You can also buy a ticket for the entire route (including the NAHSHUTTLE route) directly on the bus or at the station.
3. go to the NAHSHUTTLE app.
4. enter the arrival time of the bus/train at the (researched) stop as the start time (with a little buffer).
5. enter the bus stop/train station where you are getting off as the start and your destination address as the destination.
6. book the NAHSHUTTLE.
Info: If you have already purchased a ticket for the entire route (see step 2), click on “Edit” under Passenger and select the OPNV ticket.
If you have a valid public transport ticket or a Deutschlandticket, you can also follow the detailed instructions in the FAQ on fares and Deutschlandticket above.
7. have a good journey!

Situation C

You know your starting point and destination, but don’t know whether you have to travel the whole route by NAHSHUTTLE – or whether part of the route can be covered by bus/train?
The following steps are necessary:
1. go to the NAHSHUTTLE app.
2. select the desired time.
3. enter your current / desired start address as the start and the destination address as the destination
4. book the NAHSHUTTLE.
Info: If you have a valid public transport ticket or a Germany ticket, please follow the detailed instructions in the
instructions in the FAQ on fares and Deutschlandticket above.
5. have a good journey with the NAHSHUTTLE!

Background information: The NAHSHUTTLE is a supplement to trains and buses and primarily serves as a shuttle service to and from scheduled services. It travels on routes where there is no bus service or at night, after the end of bus operating hours, directly from your starting point to your destination. Unfortunately, this is not yet shown in the NAHSHUTTLE app. This means that in the first few weeks you can also book journeys where part of the journey should actually be made by bus. This technically innovative bus/train + on-demand linking function will be implemented as soon as possible! Until then, we ask you to only book the entire journey with the NAHSHUTTLE if you do not know whether part of the route could be covered by bus / train at the same time and a corresponding search would be too cumbersome for you. Otherwise, the NAHSHUTTLES will be tied up for a very long time until this technical bus/train + on-demand link is implemented, sometimes traveling parallel to the bus service. This is not our goal – and in terms of capacity, it also prevents other passengers who absolutely need the NAHSHUTTLE for a route. If you know (e.g. at night) that there will be no bus or train service, we invite you to travel the entire route with the NAHSHUTTLE – after all, that’s what it’s there for! We ask for your understanding, are continuously working on optimizations in the background – and look forward to making you mobile step by step and in the best possible way!

The SH fare applies for  NAHSHUTTLE -Rendsburg, SMILE24 and Lüttbus.
Children under the age of six travel free of charge in all NAHSHUTTLE service areas.
The public transport tickets are valid in all NAHSHUTTLE service areas. For trips between SH fare zones, the price is automatically adjusted upwards accordingly

Credit card | PayPal | SEPA direct debit | Cash

In the NAHSHUTTLE app, you can conveniently pay directly by credit card, PayPal and SEPA direct debit. Users simply click on “Payment” in the menu in the app and select the desired option.

If you don’t have a smartphone or don’t want to download the app, you can also pay your driver in cash directly at the pick-up after booking by phone (only possible with NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg and Lüttbus).

Important notice: SMILE24 only accepts payment via app or card payment at the vehicle. EC (electronic cash), debit card or credit card are accepted as card payment.

Yes, the Deutschlandticket is indeed valid with NAHSHUTTLE! Simply select “ÖPNV-Ticket” in the NAHSHUTTLE app and present your ticket to the driver when he/she picks you up.

Severely disabled travelers with valid authorization (certificate with stamp) to travel can travel free of charge gratuitously within the Schleswig-Holstein public transportation system (Schleswig-Holstein-Tarif). If a companion is registered (sign B), he or she also travels free of charge.

Yes, NAHSHUTTLE is integrated into the SH-Tarif system. This means that daily, weekly, monthly tickets and other valid tickets of the corresponding fare system are recognized upon presenting them to the driver. If you do not have a valid ticket, you can buy one before starting your trip, for example at www.nah.sh.

Yes, up to three children under the age of six may travel free of charge and must always be accompanied by an adult. Passengers in this age group must always book a separate seat in the vehicle. Babies can only be transported in their own baby seat. One booster seat per vehicle is available for children. There is no entitlement to use the booster seat.

Yes. Our demand-responsive transit partners in Schleswig-Holstein offer you the option of being transported with your wheelchair.

With NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg (formerly “remo”) in the Rendsburg region, all vehicles are even wheelchair-accessible and one of the vehicles offers electric wheelchair access.  When booking a ride, simply indicate which wheelchair you have, and a suitable vehicle will come and pick you up.

We strive to make our transportation accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities or technical aids. Our goal is to provide a user-friendly and inclusive experience for all travelers. Many of our vehicles meet the technical standards for accessibility. You can select the accessible vehicles when booking your journey. However, you should be physically able to manage a small step into the vehicle or the wheelchair ramp. Our drivers will do everything possible to enable you to get into the vehicle. However, if you notice any barriers or have any difficulties, please contact us. We value your feedback and will do our best to resolve any problems as quickly as possible.

That depends on the service area you are travelling in. In the Rendsburg region, for example, two of the five vehicles have bike racks. Unfortunately, the app is not yet able to assign people with bicycles to specific vehicles. Therefore, if you have a bike and want to take it with you, simply call 0431-66019-93 NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg und NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup) or 04841-675-55 (Lüttbus) instead of booking via the app, let us know and we’ll take care of the rest.

As NAHSHUTTLE is a supplement to public transport, the same rules apply, and this means that our four-pawed friends are also welcomed to travel with us. Please note, however, that dogs may only be transported under the supervision of a suitable person. Dogs that may endanger fellow passengers must wear a muzzle. A “single ticket – child” must be purchased for dogs. Guide dogs accompanying a blind person are always permitted for transport. Other animals may only be carried in suitable containers. Animals are not allowed on seats.

The demand-responsive transit service of NAHSHUTTLE started in August 2021 as “remo” in the Rendsburg region, which includes the towns of Rendsburg and Büdelsdorf, as well as the municipalities of Borgstedt, Fockbek, Nübbel, Schülp, Westerrönfeld, Osterrönfeld, Schülldorf, Schacht-Audorf, Rickert, Jevenstedt, Hohn and Alt Duvenstedt.

NAHSHUTTLE also operates as NAHSHUTTLE-Süderbrarup ( formerly “Smartes DorfSHUTTLE”) in Amt Süderbrarup in the County of Schleswig-Flensburg. From March 29, 2024 onwards, this service will be called “NAHSHUTTLE” and extend throughout the entire Schlei region.

“Lüttbus” is also part of the NAHSHUTTLE family and operates in Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland in the County of Nordfriesland.

The NAHSHUTTLE’s points of departure and destinations are either virtual stops or existing bus stops. Virtual stops mark specific addresses that are stored in the system but are not directly physically visible or publicly marked.

Before booking the journey, the starting point, i.e. the virtual stop, will be displayed. This is where you will be picked up. The end of your trip is then at a virtual stop near your actual destination. Over 500 virtual stops have been set up in Amt Süderbrarup, approx. 1,300 have been set up in the Rendsburg region and approx. 250 have been set up in Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland. The virtual stops are located at approx. 250m from each other. They are displayed in the NAHSHUTTLE app after you confirm your booking.

The NAHSHUTTLE is a great addition to trains and buses and ensures that more people in rural areas have access to local transport. To make the shuttles even better in this function, we are constantly trying out different things as part of the SMILE24 pilot project. Our aim is to use the vehicles as efficiently as possible. To achieve this, it is good if there are as few empty vehicles as possible and of course if the shuttle pools several people with similar booking requests. In technical terms, this is called “pooling”.
The following will change for all booking requests for shuttle rides from December 2, 2024: Once you have entered your point of departure, the NAHSHUTTLE app will show you the area in which you can select a destination. The area no longer covers the entire SMILE24 service area during the day. However, you can still travel by public transport throughout the entire service area. The NAH.SH app shows you linked routes that will take you to your destination. This sometimes means that you have to change buses to get to your destination, especially on longer journeys. If you have any questions about this, or if the NAH.SH or NAHSHUTTLE app doesn’t show you any travel options for a particular route you’ve taken so far, please write to us at nahshuttle@nah.sh.

It depends on which service area you are in.

You can travel with NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg (formerly “remo”) in the Rendsburg region at the following times:

Fri: 9:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. the following day
Sat: 9:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. the following day
Sun: 9:00 pm – 12:00 am

With “NAHSHUTTLE – SMILE24″ in the Schlei region you can travel 24/7 throughout the entire Schlei region
With the “Lüttbus” in the Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland you can travel at the following times:

Mon-Fri: 5:00 am – 9:00 pm
Sat: 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Sun: 8:00 – 21:00

NAHSHUTTLE is not a taxi service. Even though we intend to include local taxi companies into our system, we transport people according to the laws of public transportation, which means that pick-ups and drop-offs take place at predefined stops, which also include virtual stops. All stops can be reached by foot within minutes. The use of virtual stops also contributes to the efficiency of the demand-responsive transit service.

NAHSHUTTLE currently operates in three regions in Schleswig-Holstein: the Rendsburg region, Amt Süderbrarup (to be extended throughout the entire Schlei region as of March 29, 2024) and Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland. The boundaries for the service areas are clearly defined and the vehicles therefore only transport passengers within these areas.
In the coming years, we plan to enter further partnerships and integrate more service areas in Schleswig-Holstein into our app. Keep an eye out for your region to become the next NAHSHUTTLE partner region.

Write us at busverkehr@nordfriesland.de or call us at 04841-675-55 (only for Lüttbus), email us at nahshuttle@nah.sh (for NAHSHUTTLE-Rendsburg), or email us at kundendialog.regiobusnord@deutschebahn.com (only for SMLE24) and we’ll help you find what you’re looking for.

Please note that we can process and reply to e-mails regarding lost property requests that reach us after 6 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays on the following working day at the earliest.

After downloading the app, the user enters the requested user data as part of the registration process. This involves data such as name, e-mail, cell phone number, payment data and, if applicable, special requirements (e.g., wheelchair user). All personal data processing complies with the legal requirements for data protection.
